New Construction

Installing radon control systems during the construction of homes and
commercial buildings in high radon potential areas saves money, improves
value of property, and reduces future liability!

CVC has extensive experience in designing radon control systems to be incorporated into the construction of new homes and commercial buildings.  In fact, CVC has been involved with the research and development of many of the techniques that have been adopted by the US EPA in its Model Standards for residential buildings and the construction of new schools.

Radon Resistant New Construction (RRNC)

The concept behind radon control systems in new homes is to install a system by which soil gases can be easily collected beneath the slab and passively exhausted to the outdoor air.  Depending upon economic considerations and what is being planned by the builder, this may include a 4 inch layer of washed aggregate, inter-connected loops of perforated pipe or specially designed drainage mats.

When properly designed and coordinated in the field, soil gas vent pipes can be routed up through the building to the roof where the soil gases can be vented without the assistance of a fan and where the exhaust vent appears to be a normal roof penetration.

Radon resistant new construction systems can have other benefits such as reducing soil and interior building moisture.  Moisture reduction can reduce problems with expansive soils and improve the overall indoor environment in addition to reducing radon.

RRNC Training
Principals of CVC often give seminars on radon resistant new construction.  To learn more about these classes, contact CVC or go to the Western Regional Radon Training Center website at www.wrrtc.com:

RRNC Resources
CVC has developed a concise "How to" manual for installing radon resistant control systems in homes.  For a downloadable copy of this document, click here.

Commercial Buildings

Design:
CVC works in conjunction with architects and engineers to design soil gas collection systems that take advantage of drainage and foundation systems already designed into the building.  CVC sizes collection systems and vent pipes to optimize the effects of a passive system.  Design details are marked on architectural plans for incorporation by the architect into the final bid documents for construction.  Also provided is a set of material and installation specifications.

Installation or Oversight:
Although CVC's designs are sufficient for installation by normal concrete and plumbing sub-contractors, requirements established either by state agencies, financial institutions, or client preference may dictate professional assistance.  In these instances, CVC can either install the systems or oversee the work of other sub-contractors.

Project Report:
CVC can provide final reports.  These include photographs of sub-grade elements as well as post-construction performance testing.
