Measurement Surveys

Basis:
CVC uses the US EPA's Radon Measurement in Schools protocol as the basis for conducting surveys in large or multi-family buildings.  From this starting point, CVC has developed additional tools and services to enhance the value of the final product and to make it a worry free process for the building owner.

Communication:
As part of any survey, CVC develops documents tailored for the individual client. This is a critical step toward insuring a good survey, in allaying the fears of building occupants.  These plans demonstrate the proactive nature of the radon survey.

Methodology (Phasing):
Initial short-term measurements:  The first step is to identify areas that may have the potential for elevated radon.  This requires the placement of short-term test devices in all rooms in contact with the soil.  After analysis by a certified third-party laboratory, the results are transferred onto an easy-to-read floor plan of the building.  Blanks and duplicates are included to ensure survey confidence.

Follow-up measurements:  Typically when elevated radon levels are found in a large building, it is a concern in only a small percentage of locations (<10%).  Long-term measurement devices are then placed to determine exposure over longer periods of time and real-time conditions.  Recommendations are typically made on the basis of these long-term measurements.

Advanced measurements:  At times, the use of continuous radon or working level monitors can better characterize the actual health risk of radon exposure in a building that is only occupied a portion of the time.  HVAC systems that only operate during working hours can greatly affect the actual exposure of employees.  CVC uses real time monitors to insure that remediation is needed and applied in the most cost-effective manner.  To see an example of this go to Case Study.

Final Report:
CVC is well known for the clarity and accuracy of its reports.  Test results are entered onto drawings for easy interpretation and future reference.  Test results are clearly interpreted for client's understanding and for use in disclosing results to occupants and future building owners.

CVC has also developed survey plans for implementation by the client's maintenance personnel.  This has been very effective for tribal organizations and school district staff.
